Intro to SEO 01: Search Engine Optimization
If you’ve been on the internet for awhile, you probably have heard the term SEO countless times. It has been promoted, marketed, and advertised as a service so much in the past decade that it has lost its meaning for most people. The amount of SEO’s has dramatically increased in the past years as well, enough to make the local business owner think that getting optimization for their website can be found a dime per dozen. In the Intro to SEO series, we hope to debunk some myths and shed some light on the mysterious concept that is SEO.
Search Engine Optimization at the most basic level is the slow and steady increase of a website on the results pages of search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing for “keywords” or “search terms.” If you’re a cell phone repair company, you want to capture leads coming from mobile phone repair related keywords.

There are thousands of techniques to do this, and no specific technique is best. A professional SEO will know which combination of techniques would prove most effective for a given local business.
Much like the algorithms behind the calculation of a credit score, SEO “scores” are a mystery and are constantly fluctuating. Hundreds of thousands of people have attempted to crack the code, but not one has succeeded. All we are left with is the knowledge that certain general practices are good, and other general practices are bad. The remaining details are left for trial and error to the average SEO provider.
